takes a place of importance in terms of general history and a remembrance of the past. Ancient civilizations were tied to ideas about gods and goddesses and to a great extent, philosophy was a part of society. Aristotle, Plato and Socrates are a few names that come up and are remembered. Without a sense of these great philosophers, it is hard to embrace the Greek culture and what would emanate from there to form a later culture that would once again delve into philosophy. To an extent, the relevance of the history of philosophy is attached to the importance of recording and learning historical facts. Philosophy is something that is ironically hardly taught in schools, and for which most people know little, but can be one of the most important subjects in terms of higher knowledge. After all, questions about the mind, knowledge, existence and God are central to the lives of most people. Although it may be true that people go about their daily existence with little thought to what most deem as philosophy, everything they do is grounded in some philosophical concept. That is, most people embrace a certain ethical code. For example, they try to be kind to others and they at least try not to have affairs. They give to charity, pay attention to raising their young, and also model a good example for the next generation. They complain when others are callus, or lie or cheat. Everyone for example wants Bernie Madoff in prison. The ethical principles with which one lives by to some extent is tied to religious doctrine, but more likely tied to a general intrinsic knowledge of right and wrong that can only be attached to philosophical thought.
