Bush to send U.S. troops in defense of Saudi Arabia, and later urged a large enough contingent to serve as an "offensive military option" (Post & DeFrank, 1991, p.75). Of course, Dick Cheney was not the Vice President then, and the statement refers to the senior Bush. It was a unique time in American history. It was before the first Gulf War, which was a time of relative innocence. It was before there would be mass fear of terrorism, something that would come a decade down the road. Some say that the shooting of students at Kent State marked the transition from one era to the next. Vietnam was over. Similarly, the air campaign perhaps marks the beginning of a new era of involvement in the Middle East. Why was the so called air campaign considered to be a watershed moment by some? To an extent, the air campaign was a new signal that the world had changed once again. Yet, the campaign in particular was indicative of a new world of technology and the innovation of new types of war. Clearly, the air campaign was a turning point because it was the first time that a war of this kind was able to be waged. There are two things that differentiated the air campaign from other prior conflicts. One difference is that it was able to be carried out in such a way so that civilians would not be greatly harmed and there would be limited loss of life to soldiers. The second reason why this was a turning point was because it was televised.
