much of what is considered to be an American artistic preoccupation to the continent. As the twentieth century unfolded waves of European emigrant artists would in fact continue their experimental
art on American soil (Rothschild 287). A variety of movements would arrive one after another and the automatic writing techniques of Dada would emerge; Surrealism and Cubism
were other styles and artists like Jackson Pollock, David Smith, and Mark Rothko would emerge in their own right (287). Yet, it would be abstract expressionism that would really
make a dent in the art world and was something of which Kandinsky was a large part. Abstract Expressionism is a style that is ordinarily referred to as Americas
first original contribution to Western art (Rothschild 287). It struck a good number of people as both messy and undisciplined hodgepodges which critics like to refer to as "squirt
and blob" (287). To this day, many artists and critics dislike the style and do not render it as having validity, or at least not as much as some other
more conventional forms. The alienation between art insiders and outsiders would however be most prominent (287). At least some artists did see a great deal of value in it. Some
artists clearly understood abstract art. At the same time, it is important to note that the style was and still is rather controversial. It was during this time period
however that theory would become a necessary corollary to actual art objects and two influential spokesmen for the new movement had been Clement Greenberg and Harold Rosenberg (Rothschild
287). Greenberg would bring about a Darwinian model of modernism that progressed from Cubisms renunciation of illusionistic 3D space and move towards an art of increasing flatness and abstraction (287).
