endeavor (Tarter, 2003). It is something that has captured the imagination of many citizens on Earth (2003). What SETI does is to try to find life in the universe.
It is something that man has wanted to do for centuries--at least some men--but it is something that was only really possible in recent years. Man has been able to
look into outer space with telescopes and actually go into space with air craft. This is something that has only been possible in the latter part of the twentieth century,
even though mankind has speculated about "martians" and such for eons. Indeed, even Plato and Aristotle looked to the cosmos and explored the universe (Koestler, 1990). Just because technology was
not available then, that does not mean that the ideation was not. Certainly, the idea that other intelligent life exists elsewhere is something that has been a subject of contemplation.
Astrobiology is an umbrella term used to describe the search for life in other realms (Tarter, 2003). At the SETI Institute, this multidisciplinary field is called "Life in
the Universe" (LITU) science; however, the terms are interchangeable (2003). SETI is actually a branch of astrobiology that utilizes the deliberate actions of inhabitants in order to detect
habitable worlds (2003). Different tools are used in SETI but todays SETI has many similarities with other life searches (2003). Tools utilized in the process are numerous. The Allen
Telescope Array for example is a new telescope that purportedly fits within the broad search for the place of Earth in the cosmos (Tarter, 2003). Because scientists who look for
