to railing against government. For example, the American Revolution is one that is viewed as something important to democracy. Also, there are other revolutions that do not involve fighting and
these are often supported because there is no detrimental effect. For example, there are revolutions in the context of thought. New thinking is considered positive as it ends the stagnation
of ordinary ways of contemplating events. In examining revolutions in general, many things should be discussed. According to a student, "a revolution is an event that irreversibly changes the course
of an event." In light of this remark, how were the French Revolution and the Enlightenment, the latter of which is an intellectual revolution, important in the creation of
the modern world? Was one more important than the other in the creation of modern Western Civilization? In answering these questions, several things need to be considered. First, it is
true that the age of Enlightenment would change everything and the world would enter a modern, and less religious, period. Science would emerge to replace the superstitious and less credible
beliefs of the time. New thinking would also come about in terms of liberty and freedom and this saw revolutions. One of these happened to be the French Revolution. This
ushered in a new period where democracy would create a brave new world. France would endure a Napoleonic period where monarchy would be thrown out, albeit temporarily, but it did
set the stage for later governance. According to Hampson (1968) the Enlightenment period was a time when the culture of the educated was thought to encompass the whole of human
knowledge. It was an exciting time in world history. Also, it should be noted that some consider the Enlightenment to be a blanket term, defining one of several dominant intellectual
