the response throughout the Christian world was overwhelming, but "why did Urbans appeal to the Christian nobles at Clermont command an overwhelmingly positive response?" It seems that this infamous speech
is well received because of several factors. In part, the negative events of the day loomed large. But the social and economic surroundings were only a part of the picture.
The rich and deep history of Christianity has seemingly made a difference. While Christians were being persecuted at the time, the fact that they were prevented from practicing their religion
in a meaningful way is enough for them to take arms against the enemies who were degrading them. Of course, the extent of the persecution is not certain.
Urbans argument is seen as compelling due to the situation that represented things at that time. Christians were condemned and the women were raped ("November 27," 2005). The churches
were seized and then converted to either stables or mosques ("November 27," 2005). Not only did the Pope recount the dastardly events of the day, and how Christians were
hurt, but he promised salvation to all followers to boot ("November 27," 2005). In respect to any religion or cult, if a leader promises something as glorious as eternal life,
it is likely that there will be followers. Of course, it is also true that the way in which Christians were persecuted made the time period ripe for change. It
is no wonder that the people responded well. While it may be true that the general social situation at the time was not good for Christians, it is not as
if Urban is simply fighting back. He is proactive, suggesting an attack. While true that the Christians were attacked first, Urbans call is really a call for a Holy War.
