his theory of economic determinism. Economic determinism, above all, embraces the concept that economic factors are integral to political and historical developments. The thesis that comes through in Marxs
and Engelss Communist Manifesto, suggests that everything is intertwined with money and that even when motivation or habit appears to be separate and apart from economic variables, underneath it all,
lies the money angle. One can see this come through in political life, for example, where it is well known that politicians promise interest groups that they will do things
in order to obtain money. One can argue that such public officials will do good things once they get the money, but the ultimate goal is for fame and fortune.
The nature of man is generally self-serving. However, economics is not the end all and be all of social life as it was for Marx and Engels, and many disagree
with the premise just described. In order to better understand the different viewpoints, one should take a look at the concept of historical materialism.
Historical materialism, or dialectical material, as described by Marx and Engels, involves the notion that there is a progression in the social systems of man. In other words,
nothing occurs by accident. It was this model that encompassed the prediction which would never be fulfilled. The projection was that from capitalism would spring socialism which would then evolve
