There is no concise, linear model to draw from. In fact, the term Buddhism is relatively new (Lopez, 2002). When one looks at the academic study of religions, there were
only four religions during the seventeenth century and in modern times, the term Paganism was replaced with a number of "isms" including Buddhism (Lopez, 2002 ). That said, Buddha lived
long ago, and while Buddhism was an oral tradition for about two centuries, written evidence would surface at around 268 B.C. (Boeree, 1999). The history of Buddhism explains an evolution
of ideas, something that has culminated in a new way to look at life. It is so much a part of the western world, that it is difficult to ignore
its relevance. Buddhism seems to be an even more important influence in America than Christianity. In exploring support for the thesis, a history of Buddhism is important. Buddhism after all
did start prior to the birth of Christ. It is based on the ideas of one man. Guatama Buddha was born in 563 B.C. and died in 483 B.C (Hunt,
1978). The philosophy of Buddhism is based on concepts derived from the man Buddha himself. These concepts revolve around his understanding of the world and the way things work.
The philosophy is practiced in many countries including Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Japan (Hunt, 1978). There are sects of Buddhism just as there are sects of Christianity
and Judaism. The main two camps are called Theravada and Mahayana (Hunt, 1978). Buddhism maintains the theory of reincarnation. This is solidly linked with the concept of karma, which is
