is the substance used to produce opium and it is the most important source of income in Afghanistan. Unlike most Middle Eastern countries, there is no oil in Afghanistan. It
is an extremely dry land with very few natural resources. Therefore, any attempt to destroy opium for natural or religious reasons could cause the country to go bankrupt. This would
economically devastate the country where the life expectancy for males and females is 41 and 42 years of age, respectively (Pilsczek, 2006). The opium economy has produced substantive increases in
rural wages and is an integral source of credit for poor rural households in Afghanistan. In addition, opium proceeds ignite consumption of domestic products and support the importation of high-value
goods. Whereas other industries in Afghanistan are extremely disjointed, the drug industry represents the closest thing there is to a national market. It incorporates multi-ethnic networks and strong north-south integration.
Clearly, the main source of monetary support for the Taliban is the growth of opium. However, the drug industry, as in most countries, fosters instability, enhances crime and hinders any
sort of democratic aspirations. Yet, Afghanistan remains economically dependent on the illegal growth of opium poppy and the production and trafficking of drugs. This essay will focus on the relationship
