Paper Store, Inc. by K. Von Huben 6/2010 Please ABSTRACT Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson were friends for
over 25 years. The nature of their friendship, like any such relationship, cannot really be understood by anyone on the outside. From the sources found, this paper argues that the
friendship was based on a commonality of thinking, a similar way of looking at the world. It describes how the friendship first formed, the relationship at its height, and the
subsequent strain that led to an estrangement. The paper does not incline to the idea that the men were sexually attracted to one another, first, because there is no contemporary
evidence to suggest such an attachment and second because the need to label everyone and anyone who has a friend of the same sex as "gay" seems to be a
recent development. Emerson was married (twice), had children, and was concerned enough about Thoreaus friendship with his wife to make an objection to it. This suggests that the friendship was
not a love relationship in that sense. The paper argues that what it was, however, was a teacher/pupil or mentor/mentee relationship, one that Emerson found much more to his liking
than Thoreau did, particularly in later years. Thoreau wanted to move out of Emersons shadow but the latter was comfortable being regarded as the force behind Thoreaus success. It may
have been Emersons unwillingness to give up his status as the greatest influence in Thoreaus life that finally drove them apart. Introduction Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson
