This 20 page paper looks at the relationship between rewards and motivation in the work place. The paper looks at the way rewards may impact on motivation, including consideration of the concepts of 'economic man' and 'social man' and the way rewards may be used to motivate them. The way that rewards are used to motivate in the real world is then considered, using a number of examples to illustrate point raised, and the advantages and disadvantages of tools such as performance related pay are discussed. with higher levels of productivity and greater levels of commitment, which in turn results in lower attrition rates and recruitment costs (Huczyniski and Buchanan, 2003). Low levels of motivation can
incur costs, not only as a result of lower productivity, but at an extreme where employees are dissatisfied it can even move towards purposeful obstruction and sabotage. There are
a number of influences in the way that employees are motivated, many o which are linked either directly or indirectly to the way that they are rewarded. For most of
the working population there is some economic motivation, they work with the aim of gaining a reward, as most need a wage in order to live. However, this approach does
not explain why many people are motivated to take low paying jobs, as such reward is an issue but it is not the only issue in terms of motivation. Despite
this, even in jobs which are deemed to be vocational there may be problems where rewards are not sufficient in scope or scale which can impact negativity in the organization
and the employees themselves. Therefore, on a cursory inspection it appears that there are links between motivation and reward. However, in order for a firm to be able to
maximize all of its resources, including labour and human capital as well as financial and physical resources it would be and advantageous to understand how the link between motivation and
reward manifests in the real world. This paper will look at the links between motivation and reward by considering different theories of motivation and looking at the way reward structures
