There is always a conflict between generations regarding the way in which traditional culture fits in with modern life, but may be argued that the relationship is far more
complex and interdependent. With an increasing number of global influences it may be argued that the influences for change are more prevalent than ever before, especially with the influences of
the media, including the internet and western television programmes, while traditional culture gives a community a sense of identity and a foundation on which they can grow socially. The concept
of culture is linked to the values of a society which can be manifested in its morals and ethics, symbols and rituals as well is with more outward symbols of
culture which include output such as the arts and architecture. South Korea has a cultural history stretching back more than 5000 years. May be argued that culture has never been
static; as each new generation comes along minor alterations and changes take place in all aspects of culture from the performance of rituals undertaken in line with societal values of
the time which may reflect events, to architecture output which lasts well beyond the lifetime of the original architects. Some of the oldest surviving buildings and their contents including
Haeinsa Temple built in 1844, housing the woodblocks used to print the Tripitaka Koreana; the 81,340 woodblocks which were carved between 1236 and 1251, at the time of the Goryeo
Dynasty can be seen as highly indicative of the culture of the time and demonstrate some of the influences which have been passed down with the way patterns of culture
