in criticism. However, it appears that there is political support for the relationship, not only has the Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Treaty (ANZUS) survived more than fifty years,
after coming into effect in 1952, despite the dispute between New Zealand and the US with that particular commitment being rescinded, there has been a further agreement reached; the Australia-United
States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) coming into effect in 2005. The moves appear to have political support, but with the high level of asymmetry of power, and the level of
commitment that accompanies the agreement and any potential benefits one may be left to wonder if this relationship is really in the interests of Australia. Looking first to the
ANZUS Treaty this is an indication of the long term support. The ANZUS Treaty was formed in 1951 and bonded Australia and New Zealand, and Australia and the United States
in an agreement incorporating defence matters that concerned issues within the Pacific Ocean. This reflected the common interests of the area, especially in the post-World War II period. However, this
agreement has since been reinterpreted to incorporate the way in which military support is granted for defence related to attacks which take place in any area. There is a
strategic reason for the alliance with the US, which originated with the threat was perceived in the Pacific region following the Second World War. There are still some threats which
originated in this area, as seen with the conflict in East Timor between 1999 and 2003, which saw the military forces from Australia, along with the New Zealand military, deployed
