caring professions, such as nursing appear to have a degree of altruism within the motivation to follow such a career. There is little doubt that both caring altruism are likely
to be observed in anyone that undertakes a caring career and that caring and altruism are closely linked. However the link between caring and altruism is similar to that of
the chicken and the egg when seeking to determine which comes first and views have been put forward to support both possible positions. Jean Watson proposes that caring is
the basis of altruism, while other such as Joyce Travelbee and Patrica Benner propose altruism is the basis of caring. If we
look at the position of Watson first, here we have a view of caring as a more spiritual and holistic Watson appears to have the approach that the basis of
caring is love, not in the form of romantic love, but in love for others. If we see love as an unselfish emotion then one method of expression is the
caring for others, which then leads to a altruism perspective, meaning that caring can lead to altruism, with caring as the foundation paradigm.
To understand this approach we can look to the caring theory of Watson, which is based on this main elements, these are the carative factors, which have been developed
into the clinical caritas processes, the transpersonal caring relationship and the caring moment or caring occasion (Watson, 1996). The foundation of
