(2002) provides history lessons and how the world came to be as it is, but he focuses on Jordan as a new type of symbol. In the book, Lafeber (2002)
is critical of Jordans representation of Nike when Nike is so controversial. The paperback version of Lafebers (2002) book includes a look at the relationship between Michael Jordan and September
11th. Lafeber (2002) explains that coincidentally, Jordan was supposed to announced his retirement the week that the terrorists struck. Because of the attacks, Jordan did not make the announcement for
a few weeks (Lafeber, 2002). Then, he announced quite quickly that he would return to the basketball court to play for the Washington Wizards (Lafeber, 2002). At the time,
he also pledged to donate $1 million dollars (Lafeber, 2002, p.166) of his annual salary to efforts of relief connected to the September 11th tragedy. One would think that
to be a very generous offer, but in light of the material in the book and the way that Jordan profited, the author does not give him a pass. Rather,
Lafeber (2002) writes: "He did not indicate how much, if any, of the $30 to $35 million he collected each year from more than a dozen endorsements would go to
these other charities" (p.166). The author minimizes the generosity of Jordan and continues to rail against him because he takes money from a number of unscrupulous sources. Nike
is highlighted in the book, but by no means the only association with Jordan that is criticized. For this author, Michael Jordan is symbolic of the new way that business
