reflection of the environment in which they live. It can be contended, in fact, that Hopi mythology and spirituality is inherently tied to their interrelationship with the environment in
which they exist. This results in a sort of critical balance between need and supply. In most cases this relationship results in a deep respect for that environment.
In order to explore this connection more fully, however, we must first recognize that most of mankinds subsistence behavior is the result of an equilibrium between need and supply.
The resulting equilibrium is precarious to say the least, balancing between optimality and rationality (Rossingnoli, 1996; Rizzello, 1996). A people who more directly depend on their environment
for their everyday needs are more likely to respect that environment and even to have certain spiritual guidelines in place which relate to their relationship with that environment. These
guidelines are most often reflected in a cultures mythology. Courlander (1987) relates one Hopi myth which has been passed through generations of the people tells of the creation
of three subsequent worlds by the Great Spirit. Each world he complimented with people, hoping that they would learn to live in harmony with their world. Each time,
however, he was disappointed as the people began to become preoccupied with their evil ways. Each time they became corrupt and immorality became the norm. Each time they
began to fight among themselves and to have great wars. Each time, the Great Spirit was left with no option but to destroy the corruption and greed which he
