This is a 5 page paper discussing the changes in the relationship between Holmes and Watson throughout the three cases of “A Scandal in Bohemia”, “The Speckled Band”, and “The Copper Beeches”. Originally a father and son, or mentor and student relationship, Watson eventually becomes disillusioned with Holmes’ coldness and criticism. After Watson marries and leaves he revisits his old friend to reunite on a case and finds that their relationship has matured, is more light-hearted and on equal ground.

working companions of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are continuously assessing one another. As researchers have tried to understand their relationship, their basic first impressions of one another have often
resurfaced throughout most of the novels. At the beginning of their relationship Watson is tentative but then becomes quite eager to learn from his new companion. Holmes enjoys the mentor
he has become and is quite fatherly and protective of Watson as well as enjoying the input from Watson. Over the course of the years, and the cases however, it
appears that Watson is becoming tired of Holmes overbearing character. Once separated and Watson is married, the two friends reunite and their relationship is much more light-hearted, mature and based
on a mutual respect. John Watson sensed a great loneliness in his new companion and a distance since Holmes insisted on calling him "Watson" from the start of their relationship.
Watson also commented on the drug usage of Holmes which seems to cause him a great deal of concern. At times it seems that Holmes shuns company, even Watsons, and
is especially uncomfortable around ladies which is perplexing to Watson as he himself is married. But, just a Watson is ready to despair in his friends apparent depression Holmes will
surprise him by playing his favourite melodies on the violin or insisting on a brisk walk to the park (Beginnings, 2002). Holmes, on the other hand, although liking Watson
immensely upon first impression which surprised him because he was not keen to share his accommodations, believes that Watson is depressed and confused because of his experiences in the war
