voluntary sources. Many in low income neighborhoods claim they do not have the wherewithal to even get to a general medical facility. Although some cities, inclusive of the boroughs of
New York, provide services such as Access-A-Ride, and some medical facilities provide transportation, logistics is a concern particularly for the rural poor. When discussing the relationship between health status
and health services utilization, there are several specific health needs that stand out, as well as certain types of health services associated with those needs. For example, pregnant women often
require extraordinary care in that they need to be seen, evaluated, and tested regularity throughout their nine months of pregnancy. Those who are alcoholics, drug addicts or who are very
young are the ones who often avoid the doctors office and this can lead to difficulties not only in childbirth, but in respect to long-term problems with the child. Another
group that is in need of services is the elderly. As people age, they often incur diseases and their medical needs increase. As they take on more and more prescription
drugs, driving becomes problematic. With a myriad of symptoms, diagnoses, and reduced mobility, sometimes additional services are necessary such as transportation, assistance at home and various health utilization measures. These
may include the scheduling of office visits, hospital admissions and outpatient testing. There are many areas where treatment is necessary and services are either underutilized or not available. Clearly, the
