sense of responsibility and judgment. Clearly, these things are somewhat related to ethics. A politician who exercises good judgment, takes responsibility for his actions and has passion for a
cause will do well. At the same time, many have said that ethics and politics are at odds. What is the real relationship between ethics and politics? Are ethics
absolute? Max Weber asks some of these same questions. He asks: "What relations do ethics and politics actually have? " (Weber). He goes on to contend that on
occasion, an "exclusive choice" is thought to exist between two propositions where either one or the other is thought to be correct (Weber). At the same time, it is true
that any ethic related to the world does establish commandments that are identical in respect to "erotic, business, familial, and official relations" (Weber). Then the theorist asks: "Should it really
matter so little for the ethical demands on politics that politics operates with very special means, namely, power backed up by violence?" (Weber). One has to question the power and
authority of the government. It is in fact authority that is well deserved perhaps, but the government intrudes a great deal on individual turf without ethical concerns. Mandatory drug laws
take family cars when the owners are not even guilty of a thing. College students are taken from their families for many years because of a single mistake. Innocent people
are sometimes put to death by the government for the sake of deterrence when it is thought that they have committed murder. It does seem that a government that uses
power with the threat and use of violence is not ethical. It cannot be. It is coercive. Weber goes on to look at The Sermon on the Mount and interjects
