rate. There is evidence of this throughout the world. For example, the Banjarnegara education agency chief Washadun claims that the high drop out rates have been due to poverty,
a condition that has worsened since the economic crisis in 1997 ("Poverty," 2002) . In the United States a similar but not as obvious situation exists. Within the ghettos are
failing schools. Many wonder what ever happened to the dictum that separate but equal was impossible, a statement to come from the infamous Brown v. Board of Education in the
1950s. It seems that the wealthier districts do get more funding and those who live in poverty are taught in impoverished schools. Those who grow up in
impoverished backgrounds do not generally receive a good education. It is assumed that everybody is equal after they have grown up. However, that is not the case. A bad education
is responsible for the cycle of poverty. And the issue is largely economic. Resolving the problem of poverty simply involves putting food on the table. For example, if poor children
are sent to school hungry they cannot learn. Further, their minds cannot help but wander and dwell on their problems concerning basic human needs. If they do not know where
their next meal is coming from, or where they will sleep that night, they are not likely to care about who discovered America. The main problem today is that schools
are integral to the development of future generations so that by keeping schools in bad shape, the society is actually condoning poverty. The only way out is through education. The
