crime. While perhaps there are many people who abuse drugs, legally obtained drugs, and do not partake in any criminal activity, the truth is that drug abuse in general puts
a person in a very different state of mind that has little, if any, regard for legalities and good behavior, especially if one needs more drugs and they are not
easily accessible. The following paper examines the relationship, or relationships, between drug abuse and crime. The Relationship Between Drug Abuse and Crime There are many levels wherein one
can see a relationship between drug abuse and crime, or drugs and crime in general. One author notes, for example, "Drugs are related to crime in multiple ways. Most directly,
it is a crime to use, possess, manufacture, or distribute drugs classified as having a potential for abuse (such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and amphetamines)" (Executive Office of the President:
Office of National Drug Control, 2006). The author also notes, as was touched upon in the introduction, that drugs are related to crime in relationship to the behavior of the
user who is more likely to commit crimes. A study from 1997 indicated how "illicit drug users were also about 16 times more likely than nonusers to report being arrested
and booked for larceny or theft; more than 14 times more likely to be arrested and booked for such offenses as driving under the influence, drunkenness, or liquor law violations;
and more than 9 times more likely to be arrested and booked on an assault charge" (Executive Office of the President: Office of National Drug Control, 2006). While this is
perhaps an outdated study, in relationship to statistics, it is important to note that regardless of the laws in place, the criminal activity of drug abusers is likely increased because
