There are also stories of crack addicts stealing from and beating their loved ones, and PCP or amphetamine-driven individuals erupting in violence, so when studies linking domestic violence and substance abuse are reported, no one is surprised. Interestingly, while studies have shown a relationship between the two social problems, a cause and effect relationship is yet to be established. Although no causal link has been found, the proof does demonstrate a relationship between the two problems. This in and of itself is something important and leads one to speculate that perhaps treatment should also be fused. Although that may be the case, many substance abuse programs do not consider the role of domestic violence in the lives of their patients and vice versa. In order to contemplate the relationship between the two problems, it pays to look at domestic violence in society as well as the inextricable relationship it has with drugs and alcohol. II. Domestic Violence Domestic violence has been defined as a way of exhibiting control and often consists of physical, sexual, or psychological violence against current or former intimate partners (Erickson & Hart, 1998). Domestic violence is something thought of as being proliferated against women, but it can occur against men in both homosexual and heterosexual relationships (1998). While domestic violence can be proliferated against men, about 95% of reported domestic abuse cases do involve women (Hyman, Schillinger, & Lo, 1995 as cited in Erickson et al., 1998). Domestic violence is a major public health concern and it has been reported that $44 million (1998, p. 142) in medical costs are attributed to physical abuse proliferated against females (1998).
