There is a strong belief among those who support curriculum integration that schools must look at education as a process for developing abilities required by life in the twenty-first century, rather than discrete, departmentalized subject matter (Lake, 2001). At issue is how teaching has become a rote and wholly uninspiring event for students who are basically told they must learn but do not receive the proper tools to achieve such a mandate. With the growth of progressive teaching over the past several years, curriculum and instruction have been joined together as integrative entities providing a foundation upon which learning becomes interactive rather than one direction from the teacher to the student, connected instead of fragmented, problem solving as opposed to spoon-fed and expansive in place of isolated. Implementing the integrated model is an educational aspect not only well overdue within the academic setting but also as a conduit between school and the real world. Indeed, the stagnant methodology of traditional teaching methods does little more than erect barriers between and among each subject when in fact they all play a connected role in how students learn and develop as individuals.
