profile of the country is a strong influence on the culture; in 76.8% of the population are Chinese, 13.9% Malay, 7.9% Indian with the remaining 1.4% from other races (the
CIA, 2007). Therefore, there is a strong Chinese influence in Singapore. The countrys culture has also been highly impacted by its economic success
resulting from his position as a trading port. Mortality, along with morbidity rates, are some of the best in Asia, and higher than many Western countries (Earth Trends, 2003). The
economic development has supported a strong education system, literacy rates are high, in 2002 youth literacy was at 100% and adult literacy was at 97% for males and 89% for
females (Earth Trends, 2003). It is well established that a higher level of education is often strongly correlated with a higher level of health (Blaxter, 1990). This higher level of
education compared to many other Asian countries supports the high health levels found. Despite the level of education, the impact of traditional culture
is also highly influential. The concepts of health are based on the cultural framework which emphasises the notions of harmony and balance with the need to balance the Yin and
Yang. The traditional view is that where there is balance and harmony the body will be healthy. However, in balance or disharmony will result in a disequilibrium manifesting as ill-health.
