bullying is a problem that goes beyond the scope of simple untoward child or adolescent behavior. It often involves violent acts, or at least leads to them, but there are
more subtle forms of bullying behavior that are now being examined. There are also usually psychological origins and psychological results. In recent years, much attention has been paid to the
problem as Columbine erupted in gunfire. While there have been many explanations and plausible reasons for the fatal event, one area of focus became school bullying. It is not only
blatant bullying behavior that may lead to tragic results, but small methods of alienation where students are labeled and viewed as outcasts. Such behavior are also significant types of bullying.
Since Columbine, school shootings slowed down. At the time, there had been many. School systems are now on the look out for bullies and hate lists and children
who seem to be out of the loop. The book Queen Bees and Wannabes and the resultant film Mean Girls does shed light on the problem of cliques which are
sometimes perceived as exhibiting bullying behaviors. There are in fact many kinds of bullying. Some bullying result in death, but others result only in hurt feelings. However, these hurt feelings
can contribute to the development of psychological problems down the road. When a student is not deemed acceptable by a group of his or her peers, the consequences may be
high. The bully himself is usually psychologically troubled. Also at issue is whether or not bullying is related to self-efficacy. Bandura and other psychologists have suggested that the
concept of self-efficacy has to do with ones own belief in themselves. How can someone who is being bullied believe in their own capabilities if they are perceived as victims?
