society as well as on one another. While audience research and the away in which people perceive media has been discussed ad nauseum, countless theories of media have erupted in
academia, only to be embraced but not fully utilized. In other words, while many theories are widely accepted, they are not really challenged very much, or at least not enough
to render a coherent discussion on the relevance of each, nor their proximity to audience research. Approaches to ideology and the media such as those that come from the minds
of Althusser or Lacan or Foucault seem to provide a basis for discussion but their works are subject to flaws or at least to limitations. Why? Much of the popular
theory on this front is based on innuendo and probability. Yes, if symbols emerge as a part of language of a particular director of a film for example, who is
to say that this will be construed by all audience members in a similar fashion? Clearly, the audience is made up of individuals and they do not perceive things as
a group. Many individuals will view the same film and simply do not "get" what the producers are trying to say. For example, when viewing the film Levity, the end
demonstrates the reflection of the boy as the train leaves the station. The intent of the makers, as noted by commentary on the DVD version of the film, was
that the audience perceive that finally, the protagonist is able to leave his past behind. The image is supposed to relay the fact that he left the boy behind. Yet,
someone may easily interpret this in a completely different manner. Rather, one might surmise that although the protagonist had cleared his conscience and received some solace, he was unable to
