Antony consciously chooses to sacrifice many things because of his love for Cleopatra. Even Cleopatra seems somewhat dismayed at what Antony gave up in order to love her. In the
following paper we examine Shakespeares play and discuss what it was that Antony gave up for Cleopatra. What Antony Loses Due to the Relationship Antony is a man
who is respected and feared by many. And, that is primarily why Cleopatra wants him. He is a man that stands above others. But, Cleopatra, being a selfish queen, also
wants him for herself. And, her power is so strong over him that he is constantly battling with his identity with and away from Cleopatra. As one author notes, "As
the play progresses, Antony continues to inhabit conflicting identities which play out the struggle between reason and emotion. At one moment he is the vengeful war hero whom Caesar praises
and fears" (Anonymous Antony and Cleopatra: Themes, Motifs and Symbols themes.html). However, because of the urgings and commands of Cleopatra he sacrifices his power and his possible future by allowing
Cleopatra to determine his future. Cleopatra is a manipulative woman who makes Antony feel guilty for not doing exactly as she wishes. And, he loses not only his military
power, but also begins to lose his friends as well. "As his Roman allies, even the ever-faithful Enobarbus, abandon him, Antony feels that he has, indeed, lost himself in dotage
