these two authors. Foundations Both sets of authors, Erskine, Moursund and Trautmann (1999) and Mearns and Cooper (2005), related the therapeutic process linked to the initial premises created
by Rogers, but expand on Rogers principles as a means of understanding the therapeutic relationship. Rogers created an approach to the therapeutic process that defined the role of the
counselor and correspondingly, created a distinct value to the therapeutic relationship. Rogers identified two primary and intertwined concepts in his therapeutic process, congruence and therapeutic presence. Though Rogers
placed considerable emphasis on the impacts of these factors in creating an empathic response in developing cohesiveness, he left it to other therapists to address the exact application of these
components. In developing a conceptual view of the counseling process, both Erskine et al. (1999) and Mearns and Cooper (2005) sought
methods to redevelop Rogers process to underscore the impetus for the therapeutic relationship. Mearns and Cooper (2005, p. xiii) maintained the importance of the foundations of the relational process
and the ability to develop relational depth, or the method of achieving congruence. In correlation, these authors maintained that "it should be noted that we are seeing this as
a phenomenon relevant to the whole spectrum of human encounters and not just limited to the therapist-client relationship" (Mearns and Cooper 2005, p. xiii). Mearns and Cooper (2005,
