an Oligarchy to an aristocracy. The descendant of tyrants, Cleisthenes was the grandson of Cleisthenes of Sicyon so was well placed to understand the intricacies and working of Athenian politics
(Parton, 2002). These changes have lead commentators to refer to him as the Father of Athenian Democracy by creating a form of democracy within the state (Leveque and Vidal-Naquet,
1997). The state has seen a great deal of disagreement as a result the structure of the state and the conflicts
that were occurring between the traditional clans which formed the basis the political structure. The reforms undertaken by Cleisthenes where undertaken in order to resolve the clashes that were taking
place by restructuring the political organization of Athens (Fornara and Samons, 1991). Traditionally there had been four tribes that were based on
family relationships, in order to breakdown this family structure Cleisthenes changed this to a structure where there were three regions; the city, the coast and inland, made up of demes
(which was a natural divisions of Attica) each of these three areas would have had ten trittyes. The four tribes that were determined by birth were disposed of and ten
trittyes (thirds) were created each called after called after local heroes (Leveque and Vidal-Naquet, 1997). Each of the ten new tribes created would be made up of three trittyes,
one from the capital area, one from the inland area and one from the city, so the new tribes were made up of a diversity make up, breaking down old
tribal barriers. By making these changes traditional loyalties were changed helping to break down the causes of strife in the state (Fornara and Samons, 1991).
