Zwingli (Kreis, 2007; McMahon, 2007). The Reformation is viewed as primarily a Germanic movement until the mid-1520s, and then, a Swiss movement beginning in the early 1520s and then a movement in Geneva (Kreis, 2007; McMahon, 2007). Luther gained universal recognition when he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg church in 1517 (McMahon, 2007). However, the Reformation did not just happen all of a sudden in the 16th century. There were many precursor events and persons before Martin Luthers famous 95 Theses. Some of the important preceding events some scholars report include the Bubonic plague that claimed one-third of the population in Europe, the invasion of the Muslim Turks that went as far as Vienna, an influx of pagan Greek humanistic documents, the corruption of the 16th Century Renaissance Roman Catholic church that promoted superstitions and doctrines far afield from the Bible, the institution of Papal indulgences which were promoted to basically buy salvation, individuals being allowed to purchase high positions in the Church, and the invention of the printing press by Johan Gutenberg in 1456 (Hammond, 2007). All of these and other incidents and events acted as precursors for the Reformation. In fact, it was the invention of the printing press that allowed the Reformers to disseminate information so quickly (Kreis, 2007). That dissemination include the Bible translated into native languages so the people themselves could read Scripture, something the Roman Catholic Church had just about forbidden. Scripture had been translated in the late 12th Century when Peter Waldo translated the Gospels into French and established a group to present the truth as recorded in the Gospels (Hammond, 2007).
