unusual, but the context will gain meaning by reference to the contemporary society and its values. It is for this reason that in the eighteenth century literature gives us many
references to trade and commerce, reflecting the increasing trade that is taking place and the developing technology that is allowing that trade to occur. By looking at both the fictional
writing and the non fiction writing of the time, the exploration and increasing perception of the importance of trade can be seen. There are many authors of this time
that reflect the values that were placed in trade as we well as increasing importance. Of the many authors Daniel Defoe1 may be seen as one of the more prolific.
The novels such as Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders both have several references to trade and the way that this is seen. In Moll Flanders "I was courted by several
very considerable tradesmen" (DeFoe) is a reference to tradesmen and the wealth they are able to accumulate. However, there are also indications that trade alone does not make a fortune
for a gentleman, as there are references to rough tradesmen or those whom are not gentlemen. Books such as Robinson Crusoe and The Life, Adventures and Piracies of the Famous
Captain Singleton have as their basis international trade and commerce and the way in which this trade takes place. In Robinson Crusoe the story begins with a synopsis of
the beginning of the main characters life, and a comment that as the third child he has not been taught a trade, and that he had only had limited learning.
