It is a story wherein a familys daughter is apparently viciously attacked and killed by several dogs. The story never says what is wrong with the dogs but we can
assume that it is rabies or something similar to rabies. The focus of the story is that which involves a slow coming to terms with the death, as well as
a gradual coming together of a community. The reason why this healing and coming together is possible is because of one man, Uncle Matt. The following paper examines the characteristics
that make up a true believer, characteristics that can be seen in Uncle Matt. True Believer Prior to the discussion of Uncle Matt as a true believer, we
first lay out the characteristics that make a true believer. A true believer is a person who is generally an idealist, a person who is determined, encourages others, and essentially
an individual who never ultimately wavers from their beliefs. Uncle Matt is such a person in the face of the adversity faced. As mentioned, the one man who makes
healing and a sense of community possible is Uncle Matt. Without him, in this particular story, there would be no story. He is apparently, prior to the disastrous event, a
man who is old, perhaps given up on life, and essentially a man who spends his days watching television and checking the mail. With this event, however, his world changes
although we only see the changes through the eyes of the narrator, the father of the little girl who was killed. Uncle Matt is a man who is determined to
ensure that this will never happen to another child or another person in their community. In the end of the story when he has gathtered the people together the narrator
