Why is the Role of Lincoln in the Civil War Difficult to Assess? Lincoln went to great lengths to protect the Union
during the Civil War (Lincoln and the Civil War, 2003). He supported the amateur army which would eventually lead the North to victory, and allowed border states to continue
their policies of slavery in an effort to disengage the power and military strength of the South (Lincoln and the Civil War, 2003). The result of these efforts was
indeed the ability of the North to overcome the military obstacles which they faced, but the manifestation of real change for slaves and many U.S. citizens would evolve over time(Lincoln
and the Civil War, 2003). This is in large part the reason why it was so difficult to assess the role of Lincoln in this war. His contributions
often appeared ineffective at the time they were implemented, and it was only upon reflection that their insight and usefulness could be fully realized and established. Why Does
Eric Froner Consider Reconstruction a Failure? The reasons for the failure of reconstruction are itemized in the article. Look for
