This perpetuated mob lynchings. The Reconstruction era is the time following the American Civil War. This period occurred between 1865 and 1877 (PG). The North was victorious in the Civil War, and consequently decided to "reconstruct" the South. This involved obtaining civil rights for the African Americans that had been freed (Hirsch Et al PG). According to Censer, "Reconstruction brought with it many social, economic, and political structures that threatened the antebellum framework, and fostered resistance in southern men to all attempts of reconciliation" (64). A great deal of literature dealing with this period in history attempts to create a reunion between the North and the South (Censer 64). In history, one sees the northern abolitionist and the antebellum Old South of the Confederacy. Marriage between the two was difficult. Healing did not come quickly or easily. Hatred between the two entities continued to exist. The South did not accept Reconstruction. In fact, in the twenty-first century, there are places in the South that still hold to the adage that the "South will rise again." The Reconstruction resulted in the "New South." This was Lincolns South for it was because of him and those fighting for him that the South experienced Reconstruction. ...
