black and the other is white. It is only in recent decades that black culture is considered to be something that very much leads popular culture in terms of style,
dress, music and dance. While these facts cannot be denied and white suburban teens emulate black ghetto residents, that does not mean there is not a problem. Still, the popularity
of black culture does have some meaning in that finally, there is more assimilation, and more integration in terms of ideas and information, but the fact is that the underclass
disproportionately has a black face, which accounts for the higher crime rate and impoverished areas. The question of course is, why? Wilson (1987) begins by suggesting that social problems
are really problems of racial inequality. Within the text, it is noted that there is a disproportionate amount of crime within black neighborhoods (Wilson, 1987). He goes on to discuss
why this is the case, noting that many black families are matriarchal in nature, and that is because there are fewer two parent families on average (Wilson, 1987). He also
explains that the problems are beyond the culture of poverty thesis, and other ideas, and claims that the problems have "complex sociological antecedents" (Wilson, 1987). Yet, he does not deny
that the culture of poverty has a role in addition to social isolation (Wilson, 1987). It should be noted that the "culture of poverty implies that basic values and
attitudes of the ghetto subculture have been internalized and thereby influence behavior. Accordingly, efforts to enhance the life chances of groups such as the ghetto underclass require from this perspective
social policies" (Wilson, 1987, p.61). Again, this is one perspective that according to the author has some merit, but the problems and solutions really go beyond this simple explanation and
