have downplayed the demise of the Roman Empire and would redefine it. Yet, whatever one wants to call it-a transition or a collapse-something drastic did occur during the era. What
caused the collapse? What are the common interpretations? There are a few things that might explain why it occurred. One is economic stagnation while another is civil war (Tainter, 1990).
Still another reason why it might have fallen is sometimes attributable to the rise of barbarians (Tainter, 1990). But Tainter (1990) remarks that these explanations are not sufficient to explain
the downfall of this empire. Yet, some of those were certainly a factor in the downturn (Tainter, 1990). Elton (1996) writes: " Modern historians explain the collapse of the
western Roman empire in the fourth and fifth centuries in one of two ways. One group follows an institutional approach, which finds the reasons in the long-term and looks closely
at internal structures. A second group has adopted a political approach and looks at short term causes of collapse." The long term approach considers that the locals on the
border became farmers and were no longer warriors (Elton, 1996). Constantine and Diocletian would allow the less capable into the army as well (Elton, 1996). Then, when the Barbarians would
invade, the internal problems in the Empire would see battle losses (Elton, 1996). This is the traditional interpretation (Elton, 1996). In summary, the army was weakened due to poor judgment
and when they were attacked, they could not fight back strongly enough. Another group of historians focus on financial difficulties (Elton, 1996). There were problems in the structure of
the Roman Empire. Tainter (1990) talks much about taxation. Indeed, taxation is often problematic for many entities. It was what prompted the American Revolutionary War for example. Tainter (1990) remarks:
