In Tim OBriens book The Things They Carried the author bases much of the work on his own experience in the war in Vietnam and so one could assume his depiction of life and the reality of war is rather accurate. The following paper examines the theme of life and reality in his work. The Reality of War in OBriens The Things They Carried The Vietnam War was a very prominent war in the United States and a war that had many young men eager to join the military or anxious to run and hide from the reality of warfare. In the 1960s many of the soldiers were young men who would normally be entering college or getting married and starting a family. Interestingly enough, some stayed in college led "intense campus protests all across America" (Vassar College, 2010). Some enter the war instead of college and some had already started families. In OBriens book these are issues that many of the men deal with as they realize they have, ultimately, left their youth behind. They attempt to keep some connection to that life, and to the sane reality of such a life, through the things they carry which remind them of their previous life, and a life they may have had. As one critic notes, "the reader soon learns, the soldiers also carry stories: stories that connect the past to the future" which speaks of the life left, reality, and warfare (Calloway, 1995; 249).
