Allegory of the Cave and Homers epic The Odyssey. Discussion In brief, Plato posits a cave, in which mankind is chained facing away from the opening; the people are chained
so that they cannot move and must look straight ahead. There is a huge fire burning on a ledge behind them, and a walkway between the fire and the
people. Others walk along this path so that they cast shadows on the wall in front of the prisoners. Plato then asks us to consider what would happen
if one of these people was freed and taken out of the cave into the light: wouldnt he think that the shadows were real and the objects that created
them the illusion? And wouldnt he be unable to look at the sun because hed been in the dark for so long? And finally, wouldnt he be tempted
to return to the cave because its familiar and comfortable? The answer to all these questions is "yes." (Allegory of the Cave, 2002). The trip from the cave
to the surface is in fact an allegory for spiritual enlightenment. Plato is saying that man in general lives in darkness, bound and chained by prejudices and beliefs that
