the twin towers occurred in 2001. What was the response from these groups? The response was actually similar between all groups, at least in America. Whether one is a Christian,
a Jew or a Muslim in America, there was evoked a sense of patriotism. This is true as it respects the overall, mainstream picture. However, there are reports of extremism
among segments of each of these groups as well. Jews by and large were horrified by the event and were subject to anti-Semitism shortly afterwards. Some blamed the Jews
for the attack (Margi, 2001). However, for the most part, the American Jews were sympathetic. After all, in Israel, the people live with such threats every day. Within the
first year after the attacks a common theme in Jewish temples was to discuss feelings about the attack (Zeifman, 2002). And while the Jewish reaction was somewhat subdued in America,
radical Christians were blaming the attack on the fact that the nation was decadent and 9/11 was punishment for the sins of the people (Stream, 2001). Of course, this is
a common theme of the religious right. Radical Christians have blamed the AIDS epidemic on sin as well. This attitude by no means represents mainstream Christian thought, which was largely
supportive of President Bush, the subsequent war and the idea that the attack was abhorrent. The Muslim reaction was extremely mixed as while many American Muslims were just as horrified
as any other fellow citizen, there were some who were found cheering in the streets in areas of New Jersey. Were these rumors or are they true stories? Whether or
not one can substantiate that claim, it is hard to ignore the footage that came from the Middle East. Goldberg (2001) describes it as follows: "By now everyone has seen
