quite disturbing, to say the least. On the surface, his works seem to touch a morbid spot within human nature and within he human spirit. They are tales and poems which address some of the most hidden aspects of mankind. They speak of regression, repression, alter egos, denial, delusion, sexual fantasies, and many other conditions known to the psyche of humans. But, at the same time they are works which clearly address who Edgar Allen Poe was. Such is clearly the case with his poem "The Raven." In the following paper we examine this poem, summarizing it while illustrating how it illustrates something of the man. The Raven and Poe With some of the essential knowledge of Poes nature as a man and writer, we can examine The Raven, which is perhaps his most famous poem, and a poem that stands as "Exemplary among his musical, mellifluous verses" (Poe, Edgar Allan {poh)). In more thoroughly understanding the poem, we first illustrate some of its origins, which were said to have been partially due to his wife and her illness. When the poem was originally published, anonymously, in 1844, Poes wife was very ill and was progressing rapidly. When the poem was openly published, in 1845, there was some talk that he had "hastened his wifes death to write the poem" (Allen 3). There can be little doubt that the poem itself is obviously one which revolves around a woman who the author is enamored of in a particular way. While none of the poem, in fact, may have anything to do with Poe or his wife, the chances that it did are great, for all authors use some aspect of their own experiences when writing.
