This is evident in many ways, including the reason for writing the poem in the first place, as we shall discuss. He presents an exaggerated poem that speaks of mockery in many ways. In the following paper we examine how Popes poem offers a mockery of the epics of the time period, and then examine how his mockery of Belinda and society is obvious as well. Mocking Epics Nearly every source one can find, in terms of explicating this particular poem, speaks of its presence as a mockery of epics of the time period. One author states that "Because The Rape of the Lock is a mock-heroic poem, Pope uses many rhetorical devices in an exaggerated way, for comic effect. For this reason, the poem is a useful text for the study of these devices, since they stand out more than in poems which use them seriously (and therefore, usually, less obtrusively)" (Anonymous The Rape of the Lock rape1.htm). Another author illustrates that "Popes poem is a mock-epic, parodying the structure and language of the classical narratives that had served since the Middle Ages as the models for literature at its grandest" (McDaniel 1-15pope.htm). It is a general consensus that Popes work is what is known as a mock-epic. Bearing that in mind we turn to further examining how he is mocking other epics.
