importance of religious icons. Such a painting is "The Raising of Lazarus" (1630). It is a painting that depicts a powerful event from the Bible, and thus was an event
which meant something powerful to the people of the time. In the following paper we present a descriptive criticism, an interpretative criticism, and and evaluative criticism of the painting.
Descriptive Criticism The body of the painting offers up several figures, all dressed in earth tones save for Lazarus who is obviously clothed in nothing but white due to
the fact that he was buried. Aside from Jesus and Lazarus there are 5 other individuals, with four of them on the left side of Jesus, and one off to
the right in the shadows. The predominant weight of the picture lies on Jesus and is reinforced by the people who are on his left, creating a line, or
grouping of composition, which brings the focus to Jesus. This is added to by the fact that Jesus is the only one truly standing and his arm is raised, bringing
the line of the painting up and urging focus on Jesus. However, the fact that Lazarus is almost horizontal compared to the others, and the fact that he is wearing
white and is the focus of most of the people in the painting, also brings the line of viewing down and across the bottom. The colors of the painting
further add to the composition as there is a clear bright light to the left and down from the figure of Jesus. The light seems to be directed towards Lazarus
and thus brightens his figure as well. The right hand portion fo the painting is predominantly dark and as such further pulls our eye to the light. Interpretative
