cruelties to nature have been witnessed during the twentieth century and things have not improved much since then. Towards the end of the century, efforts were made to save the
rain forests for example, but little has been done that has been effective in accomplishing that end. Why? A lot of it has to do with greed, but because
businesses go ahead and destroy the rain forests, they may be gone decades from now. No where has this been seen more than in Malaysia and Vietnam, two nations that
have endured the path to modernity, with the consequence of having to look at deteriorating forests. There has been an exploitation in forest resources for both Malaysia and Vietnam. Yet,
in comparing and contrasting the experiences of each country one also sees differences in terms of exploitation. A large part of the puzzle--or in the differences one will find when
comparing and contrasting the jungles of Vietnam with the jungles of Malaysia is in fact the difference in modernity and attention to forestry. Much is the same really in both
areas. Yet, there are decidedly more problems in Vietnam. While problems do admittedly exist in both places, one also has to look at globalization as a culprit of the exploitation
of forests. Mander and Goldsmith, editors of a book on the impact of globalization, contend that globalization in fact has produced the largest economic change in the world since
