Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Man's unrelenting progress as a species has rendered irreparable harm to the environment around him; one of the most impacting of all situations to arise from this persistent quest toward human progress is the detrimental condition such efforts have imposed upon the world's rain forests. Inasmuch as "the reasons for the unprecedented depletion of tropical forests are numerous and very complex" (Didia 477), time is of the essence if preservation efforts are going to work. is the detrimental condition such efforts have imposed upon the worlds rain forests. Inasmuch as "the reasons for the unprecedented depletion of tropical forests are numerous and very complex"
(Didia 477), time is of the essence if preservation efforts are going to work. Clearly, rain forests do not exist merely for their
beauty; rather, they represent untold numbers of species that survive because of the life sustaining properties they provide. When the trees are chopped down, leaving behind only their stumps
as a reminder of the majestic entity that once was there, the impact upon the entire region is significantly compromised. Fifty- to ninety-percent of all organisms and fifty million
creatures know to man live off the sustenance provided by the rain forest, so to presume that falling a tree is no big problem is to refuse to look at
the extenuating repercussions that derive from such a selfish act. "Not only are other species at risk, but the human race also benefits from what the trees give.
From something as minor as the spices that indulge food to life giving medicines, the rainforests amplify and save lives" (The Choice: Doomsday or Arbor Day). There can be no
argument how rain forests give life to the entities that flourish within its protective cover. The detrimental effects of deforestation and logging upon indigenous species come in many forms,
including issues of air quality, food supply, shelter, protection from predators, habitat, population and climate concerns. Unquestionably, "mother earth has given much responsibility to trees" (The Choice: Doomsday or
Arbor Day). Inasmuch as man has overpopulated himself right out of having a sufficient amount of supplies upon which to exist, he has taken to infiltrating some of the
