understanding in mind it seems likely that there is the possibility that her novel, in relationship to the plot and the pattern within, could likely present the reader with what
could be termed a "shapeless diversity." The following paper examines her novel and illustrates how it truly could be considered one that offers up "shapeless diversity." Shapeless Diversity
in Drabbles Novel First and foremost we note that the women in Drabbles novel "are spirited, intelligent, opinionated and hardly passive, but their destinies are not under their own control"
(Gray 87). The three women, though incredibly close, are incredibly different. They are all in their 40s and they are all struggling in different ways through different things. This obvious
diversity is incredibly well balanced in that the story is not about one woman, one event, or one outcome. Each woman, through interactions with each other, provides us with an
incredible array of emotion, perspective, and perception. In an interview Drabble once stated, in relationship to her characters, that she had "a respect for the character and a desire
not to fake for them things that you dont know about them or that they might not have done" (An Interview with Margaret Drabble). While this does not necessarily point
to diversity it does offer a possibility for shapelessness, for Drabble is obviously not going to essentially make something up that would perhaps direct the plot or the pattern of
the story. There is no glorious event which concludes the story nicely, and unrealistically. She is honest with her presentation of characters and thus we begin to understand how shapeless
