Since then, audiences have been enthralled by interracial intimacy. Oliver Parkers 1995 rendition of Shakespeares Othello had also hinted that the history of race matters (Royster 59). In contemplating works
like Othello most will learn that many early modern literary texts do lend themselves to contemporary debates about race (Singh 70). In fact, the remake of Othello was thought
to be attractive to Americans hooked on the OJ Simpson affair and Berry suggested that critics overlooked the racial significance of the work (Berry 315). Others disagree. A.C. Bradley says
that regarding the essentials of the character, Othellos race is not important, and that Shakespeare would have scoffed at the notion that he was attuned to racial psychology (315).
Robert Heilman also calls the work a drama that represents Everyman (315). However, Berry says that the most significant consequence of racial alienation for Othello is not the hostility or
estrangement of the Venetian but of his own acceptance of the framework within which they have defined him (315). Othello had been able to break free of the mental construct,
and to affirm his own identity and so Othello becomes a double victim of the early colonial imagination, and an alien to himself and others as well (315). And Berry
may be right in that the significance of race has been underplayed. Others concur with his findings, suggesting that OJ watchers would indeed enjoy the old tragedy. Hamaludin describes
Othello as follows: "A well-respected, handsome Black man fierce in his field of endeavor, with a White wife whom he suspects of infidelity and kills" (Hamaludin PG). Then the author
