in Innisfree, the village which was the home of American-born Sean Thornton, the movies lead who is played by John Wayne ("The Quiet Man"). Maureen OHara also stars in the film, playing the role of Mary Kate, Seans beautiful, independently minded and free-spirited love interest. Ford described this film as basically being a love story, as the relationship between Mary Kate and Sean is at the center of the narrative. Sean, inspired by his mothers stories of her childhood, has come to Ireland to escape his traumatic memory of having killed his opponents in a boxing match. He is immediately captivated by Mary Kate and so overawed by her beauty that his first reaction is to doubt that she is real ("The Quiet Man"). Sean buys his mothers cottage from the Widow Tillane, and, as he proceeds to move in, he finds that Mary Kate, as a good neighbor and Christian, is there cleaning it for him. A storm is blowing wildly around them, as Sean embraces for their first kiss and Mary Kate responds with passion before pulling away and fleeing ("The Quiet Man"). The next day, Sean asks her brother, Squire Red Will Danaher for permission to court Mary Kate, which is the local Irish custom, and he refuses to do so. Mary Kate abides by her brothers wishes, which confuses and frustrates Sean. The plot complications that then ensue include his friends in the village conspiring to convince Danaher that the reason why the Widow Tillane has refused to marry him is because she does not want to share a home with his sister and he gives his permission for Sean to marry Mary Kate. However, later, he finds out that he was tricked and he refuses to provide Mary Kate with a dowry. ...
