for the most part: Fowler, Pyle, and Phuong. In the end of this novel the lead character, Fowler, states that he wishes there was someone to whom he could say
he was sorry. The following paper examines why Fowler stated this, focusing on how he had long ago lost all hope and direction, but he still felt some moral obligation
to do something right. The Quiet American One of the most powerful examples that illustrates how Fowler had lost all hope, all direction in his life relates
to his mistress Phuong. He looks to her as his sexual comfort, his opium attendant, and his nurse. He sees her as a simpleton and relies on her to load
his opium pipe for him, to be there next to him in bed, and he hopes that when he ages she will be his caretaker. He is not excited by
her, just merely comforted it seems, and he is even not unduly angry or jealous when Phuong begins a very powerful relationship with Pyle. Fowler even discusses this relationship with
Phuong. In this we see he has no real love for Phuong and he has no real desires other than simple comfort. He is unhappy with the threat of losing
her and engages in working towards the death of Pyle, not because he loves Phuong, but because he does not want to be left alone without his simple comfort, the
