era of the 1960s. As might be expected, there is considerable controversy surrounding affirmative action. Indeed, although affirmative action has withstood many challenges over the years, it continues
to be challenged. On the one hand, affirmative action has resulted in the betterment of thousands of lives. On the other hand, however, affirmative action is very much
just a different type of discrimination. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate both sides of the issue and to decide whether or not affirmative action should continue.
On the pro side of the affirmative action debate, there is no arguing the fact that these policies have been critical elements in promoting womens and minorities interest in the
workplace and in many other realms of society. Critics, on the other hand, contend that instead of emphasizing minority hiring and the like to give people a leg up,
we should concentrate on changing mindsets. This criticism is, in theory at least, valid. As individuals we must strive to treat all persons equally. This includes not
only persons of all racial backgrounds but also genders, disabilities, sexual orientations, political orientations, and nationalities. In the work place, academic institutions, and practically every other arena, however,
societal biases are in place. Many contend that laws such as Affirmative Action strive to negate those biases. As has been noted, affirmative action has been challenged
