as an overall gourmet food company. To understand how this chocolate came about one has to go back to the nineteenth century in Italy. Perugina did not start
at the time its history commences. Rather, one has to examine Buitoni because later on Perugina would emerge from this enterprise. The first Buitoni store had been establish during the
Unification and the Italian Risorgimento ("The history of Perugina," 1999). Buitoni would grow slowly and by 1886, an unlimited partnership was formed between Giovanni Buitoni and his brothers ("The history
of Perugina," 1999). Shortly thereafter, in 1907, the Perugina Company had been created to produce sugared almonds ("The history of Perugina," 1999). During the 1920s, Buitoni and Perugina merged; the
Perugina Company that was solely making sugared almonds would be called The Perugina-Chocolate and Jam Manufacturers ("The history of Perugina," 1999). It was in 1922 that Perugina launched its well-known
Bacio chocolates (Touring Club of Italy, 2003). Interestingly, in Italy, there had been a prohibition on candy other than chocolate during the postwar years, but this was a good thing
for Perugina ("The history of Perugina," 1999). In 1929, Giovanni Buitoni was introduced to Mussolini ("The history of Perugina," 1999). By 1935, the chocolate was exported to the United States
and in fact, there was a Perugina store that broke ground in New York ("The history of Perugina," 1999). The brand was enjoyed throughout the world. However, World War II
